Description Of The East Lancashire Vocational Training Scheme
The East Lancs VTS offers 3yr, 2yr and 1yr schemes, via 2 district general hospitals –
Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital, which come under the umbrella of
East Lancs Acute NHS Trust.
3 yr scheme - 2yrs
in either hospital (4 six month ST post) followed by a year as GP
registrar in a training practice.
2 yr scheme - 1 yr in hospital followed by registrar year.
1 yr scheme - GP Registrar (ST3 post) in a training practice.
All schemes start in August of any year, as is currently the policy throughout the Northwest Deanery.
The hospital posts are standard 6 months posts in specialities of A&E, Psychiatry, Medicine,
Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics. Candidates will go either through
the Blackburn or Burnley Hospital ladder for their hospital jobs, with the final year in training practices. Posts in psychiatry are allocated
through the Lancashire Care Trust and is common to both Blackburn and Burnley trainees.
During the hospital jobs, in addition to the in-house departmental meetings, the Scheme
Organiser leads a monthly educational meeting based alternately at Blackburn and Burnley postgraduate centres. During the Registrar year,
there is a weekly day release program over 3 years occuring on Wednesdays. The afternoon session is geared to the needs of ST1 & ST2 doctors, the morning sessions are aimed at ST3.
