Communication Skills module
1 session ST1/2

Aims and Objectives
- Familiarise the student with various consultation models and when to use them.
- Practice challenging consultations in role play scenarios.
- Develop a patient centred patient participatory consultation style. Helping patients to make informed decisions. Checking understanding.
- Have a real life video consultation mapped and assessed
- Practise telephone consultation skills
- Practise communication of risk to patients
- Dealing with dysfunctional communication and heart sink scenarios.
- Breaking bad news.
- CBT in the consultation.
- Preparation for the nMRCGP assessment.
This is a continuous course starting in yr 1 and 2 with the basics of patient centred consulting and studying some models, then developing in year 3 to more complex communication skills. This will enable the participant to look at their style using video work ,have their skill assessed by the course leaders and peer bench marked. There will be role play scenarios and problem cases to practise.
Critical appraisal module
8 sessions Year ST1/2/3
Aims and Objectives
- To become familiar with a wide range of research methodologies including Randomised controlled trials, Systematic reviews, Qualitative studies, Epidemiological studies, Screening studies and to be able to confidently appraise all these methodologies
- To be able to formulate questions and search appropriate databases in order to obtain relevant information
- To be able to apply the results of research to our practice situation
- To develop an understanding of (basic) statistics
Problem based practice management
8 sessions ST3 only
Aims and Objectives
- To familiarise the student with common GP management issues.
- To experience team working
- To understand the structure and function of meetings
This is virtual practice learning with common chosen problems to solve.
The students will work through a year in practice with a practice team of colleagues including staff issues, pct based problems, practice complaints etc
The student will leave the course with personal file or portfolio of the work they have done.
Teaching methods include formal vignettes of fact, written information, clear practice tasks surrounding practice meetings, role play and home research and work in the individual practices i.e. SEA
There is a chance to find a personal role and present work and the best practice usually is awarded a small prize.
Examination Preparation
2 sessions ST 3
Aims and Objectives
- To familiarise the student with the CBA format of examination
- To present common scenarios and practice answering in examination like time and pressure.
Cultural Awareness
1 session ST1/2/3
Aims and Objectives
- To consider our cultural differences with reference to misunderstanding in working together
- To explore cultural stereotypes and understand how this effects communication
- To share the group experience of culture
- To practice using the awareness in clinical and communication problem solving scenarios.
- To engender group answers to problems.
Drug Abuse in the community
1 session ST1/2/3
Lead by the drug community team Dr C Douglas and Mr J Haslam
Aims and Objectives
- To understand the facilities available in the community to help these patients
- To familiarise the students with the different drugs used on the street
- To discuss the strategies used to help sufferers both pharmacologically and psychologically
- To use case work to reinforce the learning
Clinical Governance
1 session
Aims and Objectives
- To understand the role of clinical governance in the workplace
- To work through some practical examples of when clinical governance can help us
- To discuss the tools used to monitor performance
Role of the PCT and Practice Based Commissioning
1 session
Run by Dr S Gunn GP tutor and PEC chair Blackburn with Darwen PCT
Aims and Objectives
This session is aimed at yr 3 and is a chance to understand the process of commissioning of service and the politics within the system.
It is also a good session of enlightenment regarding the role of the PCT.
Rheumatology
1 session ST3
Lead by Dr Teh Consultant Rheumatologist
Aims and Objectives
This session is a taste of Rheumatology and is a must for those who have not had exposure in the hospital.
Dr Teh works to the class agenda on the day with a remit to focus on the important part of Rheumatology for general practice i.e. who to refer and what tests to order in practise along with common management pathways.
Diabetes in the Community
1 session ST1/2/3
Run by the Diabetes team Nurse Dietician and GP with special interest
This session is to familiarise the student with the vast work done in the community with diabetics.
The hospital exposure is an emergency insulin driven agenda but there is a vast wealth of work being done elsewhere.
You will get a chance to try an injection on yourself, talk about difficult diabetic cases and how to manage them and share problems with the expert team.
Child Abuse
1 session ST 3
Lead by Dr A Parry GP and police doctor for children's problems.
Aims and Objectives
Dr Parry discusses her work and cases you may come up against. You will get a chance to talk about the uncertainty of the situations and the feelings it engenders.
The legal situation and the court cases are also covered thoroughly.
This is a very important session !
Depression
1 session ST3
Aims and Objectives
This half day is aimed at the new GP who will have to deal with a huge amount of mild to moderate depression in the patients. The session is to try to remove worries of diagnosis and management, and the student should leave more confident with handling depression, and fully relaxed with a full mental health examination to assess risk.
There is role play group work and discussion as well as some didactic information.
Psychosexual Problems
1 session ST1/2/3
Lead by Dr Green Consultant in Psychosexual Problems Manchester
Aims and Objectives
Throw away your shyness for this session as this is a unique chance to discuss common sexual problems and how to deal with them with a real expert. She will bring devices you have never seen before and suggest treatment and management problems for those patients who are worried.
You may not get another chance to talk so frankly!
Audit in Practice
1 session ST3
Aims and Objectives
Audit is a useful tool and necessary skill in general practice. We do not do it like the hospital!
We feel in your year in practice to do an audit, which the course organisers will assess and score, is essential.
There is no longer a statutory requirement for summative assessment, but so much can be learned about the practice, use of IT, change management clinical governance etc that we think this is still very useful. The trainers will also be able to sign of quite a lot of the report on work based assessment from this also.
This session is to familiarise yourself with the process and stages to give you a head start.
Neuro linguistic programming
